The World Boxing Council, which has been at the forefront of drug testing among boxings sanctioning organizations, completed implementation of its Clean Boxing Program on Tuesday and dropped a number of notable fighters from its rankings for failing to enroll.Among the 25 boxers the WBC dumped from its October ratings, which were released on Tuesday, are former heavyweight titleholder David Haye; former light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal; junior middleweight contender Vanes Martirosyan; welterweight contenders Amir Khan and Lamont Peterson, both former junior welterweight titleholders; junior lightweight contender Yuriorkis Gamboa, a former unified featherweight titleholder; and top prospect lightweight Felix Verdejo.WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman and Dr. Margaret Goodman, president of the Las Vegas-based Voluntary Anti-Doping Association, which was contracted by the WBC to oversee random drug testing for its fights, announced the program on May 5 in Las Vegas. Under the program, all of the WBCs world titleholders and the fighters ranked in the top 15 of all 17 weight classes were required to enroll in the program, which means they can be randomly drug tested -- from blood and/or urine -- at any time, 365 days per year. The enrollment period was extended from mid-September, with the final cutoff on Tuesday. The work to get this program started has been monumental, and the WBC wishes to thank all those WBC members, promoters, managers and many others who have actively worked to enroll all fighters, Sulaiman said. There have been some problems, mostly with translation and language barriers, and there will certainly be adjustments during the process. There will be additional adjustments, and this will be an evolving program, with the goal to provide as much protection to our athletes worldwide.Within 15 days of the publication of the monthly rankings, new fighters entering the top 15 in any weight class must fulfill all mandatory requirements necessary to enter the program or they will be removed from the rankings and ineligible to fight for any WBC-affiliated title until properly enrolled. The WBC is proud of its champions and challengers who have taken a step forward in this historic process to keep our sport clean and, most importantly, to look out for the health of our athletes and the integrity and honorability of our sport, Sulaiman said. The rest of the 25 fighters who did not enroll and were dropped: super middleweight Jose Uzcategui; middleweight Gabriel Rosado; junior middleweight Daquan Arnett; junior welterweight Rances Barthelemy; lightweight Emiliano Marsili; lightweight Hank Lundy; featherweight Hairon Socarras; junior featherweight Cesar Juarez; junior featherweight Edivaldo Ortega; bantamweight Emanuel Navarrete; flyweight Gideon Buthelezi; flyweight Brian Viloria; junior flyweight Moises Calleros; flyweight Javier Mendoza; junior flyweight Angel Acosta; strawweight Janiel Rivera; strawweight Carlos Buitrago; and strawweight Simphiwe Khonco. The Seminoles (4-0) have scored at least 80 points in each of their games. The season came to a crashing halt for the Toronto Maple Leafs Monday night in Boston. With a seemingly insurmountable 4-1 lead over the Bruins midway through the third period, Nathan Hortons goal made Leaf fans a little nervous. When Milan Lucic scored with less than two minutes to play, the clock seemed to stop running. And when Patrice Bergeron scored the game-tying goal in the final minute of regulation, the collapse was all but complete. Bergerons overtime winner almost seemed inevitable. No doubt, Leaf fans used some choice words as they watched their teams season disintegrate in a matter of minutes. But before Monday nights loss, they also used many superlatives to describe their team that was not expected to make the playoffs. Throughout this lockout-shortened campaign, many different words have been used to describe the Leafs season but if you could use just one, what would it be? If you go back to January, the season began with low expectations so perhaps encouraging would be the appropriate word at this point. The team showed improvement throughout the season and, with one week to go in the schedule, had an opportunity to finish first in the Northeast Division and claim the second seed in the Eastern Conference. Despite finishing fifth in the conference, it marked the first time in nine years there was playoff hockey in Toronto. If you had been told the Leafs would lose in the first round of the playoffs back then, that would seem like a good accomplishment. HHowever, when the Leafs rebounded from a 3-1 series deficit and held a sizeable lead in the third period of Game 7, advancing to the second round seemed like a foregone conclusion.dddddddddddd But knowing how Game 7 ended, maybe collapse is the best way to define the season. With all the momentum in Blue and White, many of the feel-good thoughts were replaced by bitter disappointment as many realized a rare opportunity had been missed. With higher expectations comes a greater chance to be letdown, a feeling Leafs fans all too well. With the team exceeding the early expectations but not meeting the new levels, rollercoaster could be the operative word. They started off slowly, climbed up during the regular season to the summit of the playoffs before crashing down at an alarming rate. There were plenty of ups and downs but it was a great ride. For those who have witnessed all the trials and tribulations of the Leafs over the years, perhaps typical is the right word to use. As the team with the longest Stanley Cup drought, failures have been more plentiful than successes so its not surprising that they would steal defeat from the jaws of victory. The law of averages just doesnt seem to hold for the Leafs. These are just some of the words that could be used to describe the 2012-13 season in Toronto but there are plenty more words in the dictionary. If you could use just one word to the describe the Leafs season, what would it be? As always, its Your! Call. ' ' '
